Light - diversity of unique properties

 what is light

  • Light holds many records. Nothing is faster than light: it travels at 300,000 kilometres per second! The light from the moon reaches us in about one second
  • Light can be focussed down to a few millionths of a millimetre- light enables nanometre precision
  • The shortest pulse can be achieved with light, as short as a femtosecond -  that's a millionth of a billionth of a second.
  • Light can easily be superposed. This means that terabits, or millions of megabits, can be transmitted per second -  through a single tiny glass fibre.
  • Mankind makes use of these properties - light changes our lives.
