EXPERIMENT 1

Does a reflected light source also produce shadows?


 

You need:

  • 1 mirror
  • 1 candle
  • 1 object, for example a pencil

How do you perform the experiment?

In a dark room place a candle and another object in front of a mirror.

Answer the following questions:

How many shadows do you see?   ( ) two   ( )  four      ( ) six

How many shadows did you expect?

Why are some shadows rather pale or not visible at all?


em_trans From the observations you can conclude that the mirror reflects the object as well as its shadow. The pale shadows of the object and the candle show that also the reflected candle is a light source and produces its own shadows.
