EXPERIMENT 3

The mirror image of a mirror image

What you need:

  • 2 mirrors
  • tape
  • 1 dice
  • 1 white piece of paper with a line on it

How do you perform the experiment?

Both mirrors are taped together at their back side, such that they can be opened and closed like a book. Put these mirrors at an angle across the line on the paper. Place the dice between the mirrors. Start with the mirrors set completely open, then close them stepwise. At each step look at the mirror image.

qm.gif What do you observe?

At what angle do you see 2, 3, 4, 6 of 8 dice? (you should include the real one)
In the pictures below you can see some of them.
What kind of figures are formed by the mirrored line?
In how many parts is the imaginary circle divided when you see 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 dice?
How many sides of the dice can you see in each of the set-ups?

You can see other nice images in the mirrors if you open them at the right angle and put them on coloured images. For example on a circle or a straight line. Look for others.

Magic mirror  - Caleidoscope

Maybe you know the "magic mirror" or caleidoscope. It consists of two or three mirros, who form an angle in between, and who are mounted in a tube. You look at colored pieces of glass. The mirrors reflect them many times. Consequently you see a regular pattern, even if you turn the caleidoscope and the pieces of glass are mixed.

Discuss with your friends how to build your own caleidoscope.
